Description
Condition: POOR
This Cummins 5.9 originally powered a Gillig Hybrid transit bus. In January of 2025 the bus was parked outside for several weeks with below freezing temperatures. A lot of antifreeze was noticed on the ground. With the antifreeze in the surge tank low, we set out to find the cause. A cracked #4-cylinder wall. The coolant was weak and froze cracking the block. Antifreeze filled the combustion chamber and flowed through the open exhaust valve into the manifold and exhaust where it dripped out onto the ground. The engine was never rotated so the only real damage was the cracked cylinder wall.
These engines do not have pressed in sleeves, but they can be bored, and a dry sleeve can be installed. See the pictures I have added.
There are parts missing. No turbo or EGR cooler.
The ESN is 74734703
The engines build year is 2021
Miles on this engine 162268.
Below is some info from the internet.

Cummins 5.9 block basics

  • Block type: Cast iron

  • Original design: Parent bore (no liners from the factory)

  • Typical rebuild: Bore & hone up to +0.020" or +0.040" with oversize pistons

  • Installing liners — what’s possible

✔ Yes, liners can be installed

A competent diesel machine shop can:

    • Bore the cylinder oversize

    • Install dry sleeves (press-fit)

    • Finish hone to standard piston size

This is common in heavy-duty diesel repair, especially when:

    • A cylinder is cracked

    • Severe scoring or damage exists

    • The block has already been bored to max oversize

  • SOLD AS IS - LIST OF ITEMS MISSING MAY NOT BE ALL INCLUSIVE. RESPONSIBILITY OF BUYER TO INSPECT ENGINE PRIOR TO PURCHASE.
